Dainty Pockets

Hi folks, hope you are having a lovely summer so far. Wow, it's been a wee while since I wrote on here. Things have been busy as always, making this and making that as well as watching the babes grow and play. Tiny D is now 4 and half and starts school in September, and Baby D, well, he's 2 and half and no longer really a baby.

I've been meaning to design a bit of a free pattern for ages now, and I thought how cool to make something to bring a new lease of life to a old piece of clothing. So here, I have these very pretty Dainty Pockets for you guys to make. They are great for practising the Intarsia technique and great to use up some scraps, let me know what you think :)

English Version - American version also available to download on Ravelry and Love Crochet

Materials;
♥ Scraps of DK or sport weight yarn. I would strongly recommend using a washable yarn so you can leave your pockets attached when washing. Here DROPS Cotton/Merino has been used in the following colours;
White (Main Colour), Pistachio, Mustard Yellow, Vanilla, Ice Blue, Powder Pink, Cerise and Lavender.
♥ 3.5mm hook

Stitches used;
ch = chain
slst = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet

Abbreviations;
frm = from
st(s) = stitch(es)

Gauge;
8 stitches x 8 rows = 4cm x 4cm using double crochet

Finished size;
Length = 12cm x Width = 11cm

Tip - You may want to prepare your yarn by wrapping the scraps used for the flowers around pieces of card or pegs to make bobbins.
This will make it easier if they get tangled.

Make 2
With Main Colour yarn, work 9ch.

Row 1;
2dc in 2nd ch frm hook. Work 1dc in each chain across to end with 2dc in very last chain, turn (10 sts).

Row 2-7;
1ch, 2dc in first dc. 1dc in each dc across to end with 2dc in very last dc, turn (your stitches will increase by 2 per row with 22 dc in total after row 7 is complete).

Now, continue to work from the grids below, snaking your way up and starting at 1. Each square of the grid represents 1dc. Please ensure to also work 1 turning chain at the beginning of each row.

Left Hand Pocket Grid

For each pocket, continue by working...

Row 19-22;
1ch, 1dc in each dc across to end, turn.

Row 23;
2ch (counts as 1tr), miss first dc, 1tr in each dc across to end, turn.

Row 24;
With Mustard Yellow, work slst in each tr across ending with slst in the top of beginning 2 ch. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

The front and back of your pockets should something look like this;

You may want to block your pockets by pinning them on to your ironing board, setting your iron to steam and hovering it over your pockets for a few seconds, ensuring not to touch the stitches with your iron. Let your pockets cool down and unpin. Now they should hold their shape.

To finish, sew your pockets on to your chosen jumper or cardigan using a darning needle and your Main Colour yarn.

Ta-dah! You can now wear your newly revamped piece of clothing with joy!

I do hope you enjoying making these pockets just like I did!

The pattern is available to download for free from from Ravelry and Love Crochet in both English and American terms.
